Tanzania stands at a crucial point in its development path. Although the country has achieved remarkable economic growth, the challenge of ensuring inclusive growth persists. The CEO Roundtable of Tanzania (CEOrt) recognizes the vital role that the private sector can play in fostering inclusive and sustainable development.
The CEOrt advocates for a strategic approach to “privatizing growth” by harnessing the dynamism and innovation inherent within the private sector. This approach involves empowering local businesses through streamlined regulations, improved access to finance, and entrepreneurship education to enable domestic enterprises, SMEs, and startups to thrive and become significant players in the global marketplace.
Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) are another crucial aspect of this strategy. By leveraging private sector expertise and investment, Tanzania can unlock new sources of capital and innovation. Collaborative PPPs can greatly enhance critical infrastructure and service delivery in sectors such as transportation, water supply, and telecommunications.
The success stories globally, illustrate the transformative power of privatised growth. Ghana’s telecommunications boom, fueled by increased competition and private sector investment, is an excellent example. Similarly, Chile’s infrastructure transformation, driven by PPPs, demonstrates the efficiency gains achievable through public-private collaboration.
The CEOrt acknowledges that privatisation comes with certain challenges. Argentina’s experience with water privatisation highlights the importance of balanced regulation and equitable outcomes. However, by learning from these examples and fostering transparent and well-defined partnerships, Tanzania can mitigate potential risks and maximise the benefits of private sector involvement.
By embracing the principles of privatised growth, Tanzania can unleash its entrepreneurial spirit, drive structural transformation, and create a future where prosperity is equitably shared. The CEOrt is committed to playing a leading role in shaping this brighter future for Tanzania.
Providing a platform for thought leadership and dialogue, the CEOrt welcomed Mr. David Kafulila, the Executive Director of the PPP Center, to discuss the importance of strategic collaborations and opportunities within government priority areas. The CEOrt is dedicated to advancing Tanzania’s sustainable, inclusive development by facilitating these dialogues and fostering public-private initiatives. Moving forward, we will work closely with the PPP Center to enhance awareness of PPP frameworks and opportunities for private sector engagement. Our efforts aim to ensure the private sector is well-informed about available opportunities and equipped to navigate the application process, thereby supporting Tanzania’s sustainable development.
